Our Heritage
Inception of James White & Co.
In the bustling town of Widnes, Lancashire, a young entrepreneur named James White embarked on a journey into the world of lubricants. With a keen eye for opportunity and a passion for innovation, James founded James White & Co., setting the stage for what would become a storied legacy in the lubricants industry.
The Rise of the Motor Car
As the 20th century dawned, the world witnessed the transformative rise of the motor car. Sensing the shifting tides, James White & Co. pivoted to cater to the burgeoning automotive industry. It was during this era that the trademark “Motovalvine” was born, evolving into the iconic “Velvene” brand – a symbol of luxury and smoothness in motor lubrication.
Expansion and Recognition
The 1930s marked a period of expansion and recognition for Velvene. Establishing Velvene Oils Ltd. as a subsidiary marketing enterprise, the company secured partnerships with industry giants like I.C.I., Cunard-White Star Line, and Bryant & May. Velvene’s commitment to quality and excellence earned it a reputation as a trusted supplier among leading enterprises.
Post-War Innovation
Amid the aftermath of World War II, Velvene displayed resilience and innovation. Securing a patent for an improved spring and suspension lubricant showcased Velvene’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of technological advancement. Additionally, the formation of Velvene Motor Factors Ltd. underscored the company’s unwavering commitment to serving the needs of the evolving motor trade.
Acquisition and Integration
In the 1980s, Velvene underwent a significant transition with its acquisition by J.O. Buchanan of Renfrew. This marked a new chapter in Velvene’s journey, as it became part of the larger Carless petroleum company. Soon after Carless itself was acquired by Kelt Energy which then sold its lubricants assets, including Velvene lubricants to Kuwait Oil Company.
